Hospital Chaplaincy
Compassionate care for every patient.
What We Do
Provide spiritual care and support for patients, families, and staff throughout Saint John region hospitals.
Visit, listen, pray, and offer spiritual encouragement, counsel, and resources.
Receive referrals from individuals, churches, and community partners.
Connect patients and families with local pastors and church communities.
Encourage and equip individuals and churches to develop and strengthen their visitation ministries.
How to Request
At admission, let hospital staff know you would like to be visited by the Baptist Chaplain.
Speak with your nurse who can direct your request to the Chaplain.
Inform your pastor when you or a loved one is in the hospital and would appreciate spiritual care.
Pastors are encouraged to contact the Chaplain when a patient or family would benefit from additional spiritual support.
How to Support
The Hospital Chaplaincy ministry is funded entirely through charitable donations. While the hospitals provide office space and administrative support, there is no government funding.
Accounting services and governance are provided at no cost by the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada, Saint John-Kings Association, and the volunteer Chaplaincy Commission, allowing donations to go directly toward ministry services.
Support comes from local churches, individual donors, grants, and memorial gifts in honour of loved ones.

About Our Chaplain
Rev. Paul Carline began serving as the Saint John Regional Hospital Chaplain in July 2025. With more than 35 years of ministry experience, Paul has served as a pastor, a field worker in Kenya with Canadian Baptist Ministries, and Director of Intercultural Ministries with the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada. He also serves as pastor of Bloomfield Baptist Church.
Paul and his wife, Kelly, live in Hampton, NB, and are blessed with four adult children and three grandchildren. Paul believes that God is present in every circumstance and often does His deepest work in places of pain and suffering. Paul is grateful for the privilege of walking alongside patients and their families and for the partnership of churches and individuals who make this ministry possible.
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Eph. 2:10 NIV

The Hospitals
St. Joseph’s Hospital specializes in geriatric medicine and serves both short-term and long-term patients. Many receive rehabilitation and therapeutic services following surgery, while others undergo geriatric assessment and transition to continuing care facilities. Chaplaincy services provide spiritual care, support for families, and help patients remain connected with churches and spiritual resources after discharge.
The Saint John Regional Hospital is New Brunswick’s largest hospital and the province’s primary referral centre for oncology, major trauma, and cardiac care, serving all of New Brunswick and parts of Prince Edward Island. Chaplaincy services range from crisis intervention to ongoing spiritual and emotional support for patients, families, and staff. The hospital also cares for many elderly patients in transitional care, whose social, emotional, and spiritual well-being is greatly strengthened through compassionate, one-on-one support.
More About the Chaplaincy
"‘When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’" Matt. 25:39-40 NIV
Hospital chaplaincy is, first and foremost, an expression of love and worship to Jesus Christ, who came to us and served us in our need. By caring for those who are suffering—the sick, their families, and those in crisis—we have the privilege of serving Christ Himself.
We also recognize that much of this ministry takes place through faithful followers of Jesus in local churches. Alongside providing a hospital chaplain, we seek to encourage and equip churches in their own ministries of visitation and care.
A new opportunity has emerged as Horizon Health has committed to ensuring that every patient is offered access to available spiritual support while fully respecting patient privacy. This pilot initiative has begun in Saint John hospitals, with information in every room inviting patients to request chaplaincy and other support services.
In response to this growing opportunity, our Chaplain’s hours were increased from 10 to 20 hours per week in June 2026.
We trust God to continue providing the resources needed for this ministry and are grateful for your prayers and partnership.
